Republic Food Enterprise Center
The Republic Food Enterprise Center (RFEC) operates a food hub in Fayette County. We will utilize a comprehensive approach to link the gaps from farm to table. RFEC will respond to the nutritional needs of Western Pennsylvania by stimulating agricultural production, producing value-added products, distributing local produce and products, and developing retail outlets within food deserts throughout the region.
The RFEC food hub in Fayette County is located specifically in Republic, PA, and includes a large aggregation center where we sort, wash, package, and stabilize local produce. We also operate a shared use kitchen where farmers and local entrepreneurs can utilize our certified kitchen to produce value-added products such as jams, jellies, sauces or, healthy frozen meals. Also, farmers can utilize the RFEC shared use kitchen to co-pack a variety of specialty products with a small minimum batch requirement. Additionally, we are starting a Local Eats, Local Treats program similar to a CSA.
The Republic Food Enterprise Center also aims to open a retail outlet at our facility this year. This is very exciting for RFEC as our surrounding community is considered a food desert, where no fresh produce is available within ten miles. By opening our retail outlet, we will eliminate this food desert while also creating forty new full-time positions; thirty of which will be filled by underserved Fayette County residents.
RFEC will serve as a comprehensive center for the development of sustainable food products and social enterprise for Western Pennsylvania, which will benefit small farms, food deserts, and the working population throughout the region by linking the gap from farm to table.
